in the second term than i was in the first. jonathan karl? >> thank you, mr. president. senator john mccain and senator lindsey graham both said today they want to have watergate style hearings on the attack on the u.s. consulate in benghazi and said if you nominate susan rice to be secretary of state, they will do everything in their power to block her nomination as senator graham said, he simply doesn't trust ambassador rice after what she said about benghazi. i would like your reaction to that and would those threats deter you from making a nomination like that? >> well, first of all, i'm not going to comment at this point on various nominations i'll put forward to fill out my cabinet for the second term. those are things that are still being discussed. but let me say specifically about susan rice, she has done exemplary work. she has represented the united states and our interests in the united nations with skill and professionalism and toughness and grace. as i said before, she made an appearance at the request of the white house in which she gave her best understanding of the intellig

know was derailed by the scandal. senator john mccain is one of several republican lawmakers remanding more information from the obama administration on just what the heck happened in benghazi and around benghazi. he's scheduled to give a news conference at the bottom of the hour and we are going to have measure on that. our dana bash has been doing the best she can to take in all of the information. listen, this is tricky. so many of these stories are interconnected. there is a lot of reporting. not all confirmed, but u maybe just start with this. how has this matter worked out that general petraeus will indeed show up on capitol hill and testify voluntarily? >> well, it started with the senate intelligence chairwoman, dianne feinstein telling us yesterday that that was her desire. in her words, that's a big stone left unturned if petraeus doesn't come up here and tell members of congress what he knew about what went on in benghazi, so that's where it started. then late yesterday, members of the senate intelligence committee met and decided it was imperative to invite him. dianne fein

these republicans meaning john mccain and others don't have the support of some of their high ranking republicans like the house speaker. never mind the democrats. but what cnn's ted barrett has learned is that john mccain in particular missed a rather important closed door briefing giving information about what happened in benghazi and what he was doing at the time is having a press conference calling for this select committee complaining about not getting enough information and ted barrett learned he was not alone. very few republicans, most of the republicans on this, the homeland security committee actually came. since then, mccain's office told us that that was a scheduling error and why he didn't attend that briefing. but also, before we got that information, ted actually bumped in to john mccain in the hallway here and they had a very testy exchange when ted was trying to get information about why he didn't go and mccain said to him that he had no comment. ted said, why? i'm quoting here from senator mccain. i have the right as a senator to have no comment and who the hell are you to tell

want to go after somebody, they should go after me. >> okay. so it took senator john mccain about an hour to make it to the s senate floor to offer a response. >> that statement is really remarkable in that if the president thinks that we are picking on people, he really does not have any idea of how serious this issue is. >> seems like the testosterone-fueled rhetoric over benghazi is sort of getting out of control. former cia operative bob behr joins us this morning. good morning, bob. >> good morning. >> i want to make it clear to our viewers what lawmakers want to figure out. there are three separate hearings about to take place today. this is what they're trying to figure out. one, why didn't the united states increase security in libya? two, did the obama administration try to mislead people as to the nature of the attack? and, three, did the administration deny pleas from our people at the consulate for help? let's start with the first. why didn't -- why didn't -- why wasn't there more security in libya previous -- previous to these attacks? >> well, first of all, assessmen

of congress on the terrorist attack at a u.s. consulate in benghazi. senator john mccain calls the administration's handling of the event a coverup. >> this president, this administration has either been guilty of colossal incompetence or engageed in a coverup, neither of which are acceptable to the american people. >> why does he say this before the hearings? well, we actually want to talk about the president also touring the hard-hit areas of superstorm sandy this hour. he is expected to spoost speak as soon as 1:30 p.m. eastern. we're going to bring that to you live when it happens. also, we're going to start this hour with the scandal that's swirling around the former cia director david petraeus. sxwlirchlgts for the first time former cia director david petraeus is now opening up to the media about the sex scandal that has ended his military career. speaking in detail with our sister network hln's kyra phillips. kyra has known petraeus for years, including a 30-minute live interview on the anniversary of the iraq war. she's had several occasions and conversations to talk wi

million less vote this is year than he did in 2008. mitt romney got almost 3 million votes less than john mccain did. this election, you could come up with a lot of arguments as to why mitt romney didn't win. i thought he left it all in the playing field. i thought he did as well as he could, given the circumstances. but the truth of the matter is, we couldn't come up with enough votes to win. and if you analyze this election, you can come up with 100 reasons why mitt romney lost. i'm looking towards 2016 and how can we, the gop, continue to be competitive and how can conservatives get their message across. i'm trying to tell you, to echo what patrick said. the first thing you have to do is show up. we didn't show up in the black community. we didn't show up enough in the hispanic community. we dedicated resources too little too late. and we need a long-term plan that dedicates enough resources to become competitive, knock on the door and do the things that we need to in the community. my comments about what won or lost this election are different than the comments about what's required t

. john mccain and lindsey gram and on the issue of cabinet, they made very clear that they will do whatever it takes if the president who decides to nominate -- rice, to move her over to the state department that, they are going to say no way because they think that she was at the very least in their words incompetent with regard to the public remarks that she made that it turned out to be wrong about benghazi. that's where we stand on that. you and fran were talking earlier about the fact that the president certainly didn't know about what was going on with david petraeus until just a day before he resigned. right now on capitol hill the fbi and his deputy are here briefing the heads of the house intelligence committee about that investigation because, guess what, they were not informed either. there's a lot going behind the scenes as the president is speaking publicly about the scandals that have really embroiled his administration. >> jessica yellin, inside the east room of the white house getting ready for the news conference, and getting ready for -- i assume the president wil
